Gaia AI Factory

Gaia AI Factory is a pioneering initiative on a European scale – a strategic infrastructure project developed within the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking (EuroHPC JU), whose goal is to create an innovative artificial intelligence ecosystem of global significance.

The project aims to provide state-of-the-art computing resources, tools, and research competencies to the academic community, industry, and public administration, with particular emphasis on healthcare, the space sector, and large language models (LLM). This will enable Polish institutions and companies to access modern supercomputing infrastructure, data repositories, and AI competence development programmes.

Project Assumptions

  • Strategic Objective
Gaia AI Factory is a national centre of excellence in AI, combining advanced
computing infrastructure with a comprehensive range of services – from research acceleration, through
competence development support, to commercial applications of modern
artificial intelligence. The project is being built on European values such as
trust, transparency, and responsibility in the development and deployment of AI.
  • State-of-the-Art Computing Infrastructure
At the heart of Gaia AI Factory will be a supercomputer optimised for
AI tasks, equipped with over 1,000 GPU accelerators, providing computing power
many times greater than Poland’s currently fastest system –
Helios. The platform will be integrated with the national PLGrid network, enabling
the use of existing high-performance research infrastructure and the
    expertise of HPC centres.
  • Competence Development and User Support
The project includes a wide range of services supporting the full lifecycle of AI projects:
    • training and workshops for users of varying skill levels,
    • expert support in analysing needs and selecting optimal solutions,
    • tools for data preparation and management.
  • Innovation Ecosystem
Gaia AI Factory is not merely a powerful computing system, but a platform
integrating research, industrial, and administrative communities. The project is
part of a distributed network of AI Factories in Europe, collaborating with other
centres such as PIAST AI Factory (Poland) and LUMI AI Factory (Finland).

Areas of Application and Benefits

  • Thanks to Gaia AI Factory, it will be possible to deploy innovative solutions in
    the most important socioeconomic areas:

    • Healthcare
      • support for medical imaging diagnostics and analyses,
      • personalised therapies and recommendation systems for clinicians,
      • secure environments for testing medical models.
In this context, the IMiD Implementation Department – Centre for Innovation and Artificial Intelligence
plays the role of leader in deploying and integrating AI solutions in hospitals, enabling
the effective connection of supercomputing infrastructure with real
        clinical needs.

    • Space Technologies
      • satellite data analysis for environmental monitoring, climate change, and natural disasters,
      • support for navigation and observation systems for future missions.

    • Large Language Models and General-Purpose AI
      • training and testing of modern NLP and generative AI models,
      • support for large-scale machine learning research.

Implementation Status

The Gaia AI Factory project is currently in an intensive implementation phase, with financial support of approximately EUR 70 million, co-financed by Poland and the European Union within EuroHPC JU:

  • construction and preparation of supercomputing infrastructure in Kraków is underway,
  • the project consortium is intensifying operational activities and preparing AI service environments,
  • in November 2025, the Gaia AI Factory Information Day took place, showcasing possibilities and future services for scientific and business communities.

Gaia AI Factory Consortium

The project is implemented by a multi-institutional consortium bringing together key
research, technology, and expert centres in Poland:

  • Academic Computer Centre Cyfronet,
  • Faculty of Space Technologies of the AGH University of Kraków,
  • Network and Supercomputing Centre of Wrocław University of Science and Technology,
  • TASK Computing Centre of Gdańsk University of Technology,
  • Interdisciplinary Centre for Mathematical and Computational Modelling
    of the University of Warsaw,
  • National Centre for Nuclear Research,
  • Research and Academic Computer Network NASK PIB,
  • National Information Processing Institute OPI PIB,
  • Sano – Centre for Computational Personalised Medicine –
    International Research Foundation,
  • Małopolska Centre of Biotechnology of the Jagiellonian University,
  • Institute of Mother and Child,
  • Kraków Technology Park.

Role of the Institute of Mother and Child in the Project

The Institute of Mother and Child has for years been setting standards in the use of artificial intelligence in public hospitals. As the first in Poland, it established a dedicated AI department, whose task is to seek out and implement modern solutions supporting healthcare and management processes.

As noted by Nikoletta Buczek, Deputy Head of the Implementation Department – Centre for Innovation and Artificial Intelligence at IMiD: “The Gaia project will enable the opening of a secure space for testing medical solutions based on artificial intelligence. This will be the first sandbox of its kind in Poland, linked to advanced infrastructure and clinical knowledge.”

By joining the initiative, the Institute of Mother and Child gains the opportunity to:

  • streamline clinical and administrative processes,
  • develop innovative tools supporting diagnostics,
  • improve the quality of epidemiological analyses and scientific research,
  • deploy AI solutions improving the safety and quality of patient care.
