Projects

The Implementation Department – Centre for Innovation and Artificial Intelligence is an organizational unit of the Institute of Mother and Child in Warsaw – one of Poland’s largest clinical research and scientific institutions, specializing in perinatal and pediatric care.

The Centre was founded on the conviction that a modern clinical hospital cannot merely be a recipient of innovation — it should be an active co-creator. IMiD, with its unique clinical expertise and research infrastructure, is uniquely positioned to evaluate, test, and implement new technologies in a responsible, evidence-based manner. We were established precisely to manage innovation systematically — not as a side activity, but as an integral part of the Institute’s operations.

Our goal is clear: to shorten the path between a promising technology and its real-world application at the patient’s bedside. The Centre was created to systematically reduce barriers on that path — financial, regulatory, organizational — first for IMiD, and ultimately, through sharing knowledge and experience, for the entire Polish hospital sector.

Core Areas of Activity

  • Research and development projects – conducting internal R&D work:
AI model prototyping, early-stage effectiveness validation, and
    preparation for full implementation.

  • New technology implementation – comprehensive management of the implementation process:
from clinical needs assessment, through legal and bioethical analysis, to piloting and
    integration with hospital workflows.

  • Collaboration with startups and Big Tech – partnerships with innovators from Poland and
abroad: both large technology companies and small startups bringing breakthrough solutions.

  • MCSC Hospital Leadership Innovation competition – an annual competition for
medical startups: a platform for discovering innovations with the opportunity for
pilot implementation at IMiD and partner hospitals.

Our Approach to Implementation

The Centre acts as an institutional “filter” for innovation. Every solution — whether from a startup, a large technology company, or an IMiD physician — undergoes a multi-stage evaluation: whether it addresses real institutional needs, whether it is technically and organizationally feasible, what the regulatory requirements are, and what risks are associated with patient data protection.

We are also building our own sandbox — a testing environment for prototyping AI models and verifying their effectiveness before making a decision on full deployment. Increasingly, IMiD physicians themselves initiate projects; in such cases, the Centre becomes their substantive and organizational partner at every stage of the process.

Examples of Ongoing Projects

  • Cardiac diagnostics (UES) – an AI system supporting the detection of congenital heart defects in fetuses based on ultrasound examinations.

  • Craniofacial defects in children – application of artificial intelligence in diagnostics and treatment planning of craniofacial anomalies.

  • Sleep and respiratory disorders – a solution tested in pediatric patients after craniofacial surgery, supporting diagnostics and
    monitoring.

  • Reducing administrative burden on physicians – tools automating medical documentation, so doctors can devote more time to patients.

  • Wound and bone-joint disease treatment – an innovative therapy method for hard-to-heal wounds, swellings, and neurological conditions.

  • Cybersecurity and digital services – projects related to patient data protection and secure digital service delivery in a hospital environment.
